INTEGRATED INSTRUCTIONAL MODULE
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
HOMONYMS

Instructor: Mr. Werve (dwerve2@iveleague.org)

PAIRS AND TRIPLETS
and a few even larger groups.

The accompanying instructional materials are considered appropriate for building vocabulary and spelling skill levels seven through ten.
They may, however, be applied as early as skill level five for GATE students.

The English language is very difficult to learn for many people. One of the reasons for this is the number of homonym (pronounced ahm-oh-nim) groupings.
These are words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. As examples:

The preposition to, which means "... to move in a direction toward or terminating in."

The adverb too, which means "... in addition, likewise, and also."

The noun two, which means "... the cardinal number representing the sum of one plus one."

READING AND STUDY ASSIGNMENTS

In this module, we look at a number of groupings which make up principally twin (groupings of two) and triplet (groupings of three) homonyms which are used in standard English applications, but which are commonly misspelled or misused by even educated people. These will be included in the weekly quizzes where you will be expected to know the meaning of each word, how to spell it properly, and its part of speech. Note that many of these words have meanings other than those used in these examples so you may want to look them up in a dictionary; but you are only responsible for the meanings given in the study assignments.
