IVE means Integrated Vocational Education
Integrated Vocational Education is, in its most basic form, Learning while Doing. Fundamentally, it teaches the "academic" skills--Reading, Writing, Math, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and more--by demonstrating and practicing their uses in the real world. It teaches the fundamentals Arithmetic by showing how it is used in managing money, like balancing a checkbook. It teaches the principles of , Algebra, Geometry, and Advanced Mathematics by showing how they apply to carpentry, or plumbing, or sailing a boat, or flying an airplane. It can be used in learning History, Language Skills, Geography . . ., the list is as endless as knowledge itself. But most important, they encourage students to learn in the most productive means for applying their own unique intelligence; and this is where IVE differs from current educational theory and practice.
Educational Psychologist Howard Gardner has identified seven fundamental methods, which he calls intelligences which people use in learning. The problem, according to Project FIVE Team Leader Don Werve, is that our current system only reaches out to two of these; the Verbal-linguistic and the Mathematical-logical. "This puts the rest of us--about 40% of the population--at a disadvantage," he says. "The hands-on learner, or the introspective learner, or the social learner is always playing catch-up . . . or simply dropping out. IVE changes that!"
IVE Learning concentrates on the student's dominant learning modalities,
with the teacher acting as a facilitator to help the student learn. It
is designed to demonstrate the relevance and application of a subject or
topic, to encourage and motivate the individual to want to learn; and
when a students want to learn, nothing can stop them.
Does the IVE Learning program work? Judge for yourself. All IVE
League home pages are prepared by students between the ages of 12 and 17
taught using IVE techniques or by individuals which they, in turn, have
taught.
